Evolving the Map Pin

The evolution of Delta Sync seatback in-flight maps location pins

Maps and more

Over 90% percent of Delta's passengers engage with the maps / flight tracking product offered on all 160,000+ aircraft seatback screens.

The newly released Delta Sync on your seatback experience brings an entirely new set of personalized experiences when passengers log in via their SkyMiles membership credentials. These new personalized features include content recommendations, the ability to continue watching from flight to flight, and much more. With these new features came an entire overhaul of the seatback UX, and in this case, particularly the in-flight maps experience.

Before the redesign

When Delta Sync on your seatback first launched, the maps experience had yet to receive the fully new and fresh look than that of the rest of the experience. Leadership wanted the map pins to be redesigned to reflect the Delta brand more holistically rather than having a pin of no brand association.

Working externally with our maps provider, we gathered all necessary requirements to make the change from the old map location pin to the new one.

The user journey

Take a deeper look into the user flow of Delta Sync on your seatback to see what the redesigned pins look like in action.

What I did

I led the redesign of our map pins in collaboration with both Delta's internal teams and our external in-flight maps provider. This began with a competitive analysis of other platforms' map pin designs. After initial designs, I sought Delta marketing's feedback for brand compliance, presenting a blue and a red pin variant. The team preferred the blue pin but requested a smaller, style guide-compliant Delta logo. I refined the logo with guidance from my senior UX Designer and secured final marketing approval.

I then detailed the pin's design and functionality to our external provider, highlighting a unique zoom feature: at a wide view, pins appear as simple dots, but upon zooming, they reveal Delta's main hubs and further zooming splits these into additional markets and airports.

The final design - an undeniably timeless pin featuring a radial gradient, white Delta logo, and a sleek needle - ultimately aligns with Delta's premium brand image and the new, fresh seatback design.
